RESEARCHING A BREEDER
While the JCCC cannot endorse or recommend any particular breeder, it does encourage JCCC members to strive for the healthiest Chin possible, when selecting dogs for breeding. Just as there is no perfectly healthy human that will live a guaranteed number of years, there is no perfect dog. Buyers and breeders must be aware that every dog, including rescue animals, cross breeds, or “designer” dogs, come with the potential for health problems.

Dedicated Chin breeders spend a great deal of time, effort and money health testing their dogs to select sires and dams with the best potential to reproduce "good health”; striving for puppies with normal eye, heart, neurological (Gangliosidosis) and knee (patella) function. Breeders also aim for Chin that “look like Chin” and that are physically fit to perform the breed’s intended function - human companion.

By carefully selecting health tested parents, that also meet the physical and temperment requirements for the breed (as stated in the Canadian Kennel Club’s breed standard and as evaluated by experienced judges and breed experts in the conformation show ring), the opportunity to improve health and longevity, while retaining breed attributes, is enhanced with each purebred generation. By registering their litters and providing buyers with Canadian Kennel Club registration papers at no extra charge, breeders not only comply with the legal requirements of the Animal Pedigree Act, they also provide buyers with a greater assurance that a puppy’s health tested ancestors are accurately represented.

Buyers and breeders are encouraged to perform their due diligence, and familiarize themselves with the health challenges that impact all dogs, including Chin. No breeder can “guarantee" that a puppy will not suffer from a health problem. A breeder can minimize the risk by the selective breeding of health tested parents; and offering in writing, as part of the sale contract, to assist the buyer in some way, if a specified health problem occurs.

Please review the recommendations made by the canine health research organizations listed below, and conduct your own research and due diligence. Review the health test data bases to gather information and ascertain which breeders are going the "extra mile" to produce the healthiest puppies possible. Chin deserve the best chance for healthy function and longevity. Support breeders who register their litters with the Canadian Kennel Club, and who adhere to the health test guidelines outlined on these websites:
